Diverse is how we would best describe the paddling in this mountain/prairie province. In the west of the province runs are characterized by beautiful backdrops, continuous rivers and cold water. Everything from mellow multi day floats in national parks to hairy class V creeking is available in the west. As you move further east the gradient drops but there are still plentiful paddling options for those looking to float mellow rivers in really unique surroundings. It is a huge province so don't neglect to look north and south too. A very worthwhile paddling destination in it's own right.

Whitewater Kayak Trips or Routes

Edmonton

Devon - Edmonton
North Saskatchewan River - This is a great canoe trip. You would think you are way further away from the big city than you are . The river valley is incredibly scenic. There are no rapids to speak of but some sections of the river will be a bit swifter than others. Headwinds tend to be a greater threat than rapids. This trip can either be done as a long day trip, or as an over night camping on Big Island. There several put in and take out options. Shorter day trips can be had in Edmonton by combining the various river access.
23 Ave to Fox Drive
Whitemud Creek - Moving, warm water adventure right in town! Fun creek with lots of turns. Some swifts where the creek narrows at higher flows. A handful of log jams require portaging and even more carry-overs for beaver dams at lower flows.
River Side
Big Lake - Great Lake for Edmonton adventurers looking to get out on the water. Loads of wildlife and a great city escape, located just 25 minutes outside of Edmonton.
Chickakoo Lake Recreation Area
Chickakoo Lake - A small lake just to the west of Edmonton. Has good tree protection so is more often than not pretty calm to paddle. The shoreline is reedy and boggy so it is hard to get out anywhere other than the boat launch.
Boat Dock
Hermitage Park Lake - A small lake in the NE of Edmonton, a nice spot to paddle if you are in the city and looking for a quick fix of on water time.
Allan Beach Resort
Hubbles Lake - A PRIVATE lake that will require you to pay an entry fee to use the beach front to launch. Located 30 mins or so west of Edmonton.
Staging Area
Islet Lake - A small, sheltered lake less than an hour from Edmonton. An abundance of bird life in the spring make this a popular canoeing and kayaking destination.
