Diverse is how we would best describe the paddling in this mountain/prairie province. In the west of the province runs are characterized by beautiful backdrops, continuous rivers and cold water. Everything from mellow multi day floats in national parks to hairy class V creeking is available in the west. As you move further east the gradient drops but there are still plentiful paddling options for those looking to float mellow rivers in really unique surroundings. It is a huge province so don't neglect to look north and south too. A very worthwhile paddling destination in it's own right.

Slave Lake

Mid Reach
Lesser Slave River - An easy float with a few riffles along the way. This section is approximately 20 km long and has lots great wildlife viewing (particularly the water fowl) The river follows the old smith highway for most of this stretch. There is great fishing for walleye, northern pike and also rocky mountain white fish which is rarity for this region. You can find more detailed information at the Trans Canada River Trail website.
Lower Reach
Lesser Slave River - Part of the trans Canada trail. An easy paddle with a few sections of riffles that are class one to class two in high water. This reach follows Old Smith very closely.Further information is available at tran canada trail website.
Highway 2 to Salteux landing
Salteux River - A fun full day float with a portage near top around a 1 km log jam. During spring and higher water there are some fun riffles to paddle through, however it is mostly pretty mellow. There are also arctic grayling in this river so, with a permit they make for great fishing. You also pass the historic Saulteaux Spurfield and this is part of the trans Canada river trail.
Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park Access Point
Lesser Slave Lake - This is a very large lake with one of Alberta's best beaches. You will need to exercise caution on this lake as it can get very windy and weather/water conditions can change very quickly. On the right day you can get some fun surf waves here. The map has a number of different access and egress points. Feel free to mix as you please.
