Diverse is how we would best describe the paddling in this mountain/prairie province. In the west of the province runs are characterized by beautiful backdrops, continuous rivers and cold water. Everything from mellow multi day floats in national parks to hairy class V creeking is available in the west. As you move further east the gradient drops but there are still plentiful paddling options for those looking to float mellow rivers in really unique surroundings. It is a huge province so don't neglect to look north and south too. A very worthwhile paddling destination in it's own right.

Upper North Saskatchewan
North Saskatchewan River - A beautiful but rarely paddled section of the North Saskatchewan river located approximately 25 mins North of Saskatchewan crossing. The section is about 5 kms long, however, since it is roadside this section could be lengthened or shortened. This section of river is comprised of mostly class II-III rapids formed by boulder gardens and bedrock. The second boulder garden rapid you encounter often has wood on the river right side; this rapid can be seen from highway 93. There is one class IV rapid about halfway down the run. This rapid is obvious to spot due to the gradient change, appearance of bedrock and canyon walls. This rapid can be scouted or portaged on river left or right and it is still possible to paddle the canyon guarded by this slot drop. As always watch for wood and changing water levels.
