Kananaskis River
General
- Ages 13 - 18yrs
- Maximum 6 spots available
- Paddlers should be at least comfortable paddling the Upper Kananaskis & Race course, with an instructor / safety
- Paddlers should have a whitewater roll 80% of the time
- Paddlers will need to supply their own or borrow equipment from the club (please find a half-slice boat to use for extreme slalom sessions)
- Slalom boats will be used for some sessions and the coach / club will support supplying slalom boats for those who do not have one
- Participants may not be able to participate in some sessions if a slalom boat is not available though we will do our best to provide boats
- Sessions will include a combination of flatwater, Upper Kananaskis river runs and practicing in the race course on the Kananaskis
- Paddlers must be BVKC club members
Objectives
- Have as much fun as possible on the river, with a safe environment with friends
- Identify and work towards personal paddling goals
- To grow the skills and confidence of all team members
- To become highly skilled whitewater paddlers through slalom and slalom cross paddling skills
- To support youth to pursue competitive or recreational slalom racing
- The program is focused on helping paddlers becoming skilled kayakers through slalom paddling
- To support youth to access slalom opportunities in the Bow Valley while also participating in the Provincial High-Performance Programs
- Participants may want to explore the HP or HP-Lite programs
- AWS will host practices in Kananaskis on weekends May - June, and on weekdays July - August
- BVKC Program is designed to compliment these programs by offering weeknight coaching on the Kananaskis
Schedule
- Wednesdays 5:45 - 7:45pm | On-water 6pm - 7:30pm
- Meet changed & ready at 5:45pm
- May 22nd to June 26th (6 sessions total, additional sessions on-demand July - September)
Instructors
- Liam Smedley will be the primary coach for the program. Additional coaches may join and provide further support for sessions
- Comp-Intro and L2I2 certified through the CKC-W NCCP system which includes first-aid training
Funding & Support
- If a financial barrier exists for you to participate in this program please reach out to the coach to discuss available supports
- Rental fees for non-club boats required to participate will be fully reimbursed, please submit receipts to the coach
- This program is subsidized and supported by Youth Booster Grant funding provided with support from the Alberta Whitewater Association (AWA).
